Few things are as quietly infuriating as a shower that dribbles while you're covered in soap. Low pressure is one of the most common complaints we hear across Kuala Lumpur, and the good news is that the cause is usually one of a short list of suspects. Here's how we narrow it down — and how you can, too.
This single question cuts the problem in half. If only one tap or shower is weak, the fault is almost always local: a clogged aerator, a scaled shower head, or a half-closed angle valve under the sink. Unscrew the aerator, soak it in vinegar for an hour, and you've solved a surprising share of "pressure problems" for free.
If every outlet is weak, the cause sits further upstream — the tank, the main pipe, or the meter connection.
Most Malaysian landed homes feed bathrooms from a roof tank. Physics is blunt about this: each metre of height difference gives you roughly 0.1 bar of pressure. A first-floor shower head sitting two metres below the tank gets about 0.2 bar — barely enough to rinse shampoo. No amount of new taps will fix that; only height or a pump will.
Houses from the 80s and 90s often still run galvanised iron (GI) pipes. Over decades, rust and mineral scale narrow a 20mm pipe to a fraction of its bore. The giveaway: pressure that worsened gradually over years and gets briefly better after the pipe is disturbed. The lasting fix is replacing the affected runs with PPR pipe — we cover this in our water pressure and pump service.
If the tank height is the bottleneck, a booster pump is the honest solution. Sizing matters more than brand: add up the outlets you actually run at once, match the pump's flow and head to that number, and make sure it has a proper power point with earth leakage protection — not an extension cord through a window frame (we've seen it).
